Moving CheckList 
We reckon you should consider getting multiple moving quotes from several removal companies, it's the best way to save money on moving services these days.
Below is a comprehensive list highlighting everything you need to do for your house moving project, all the things you must consider to help make your household move easier and more smooth:
Address Change:
- Give forwarding address to post office 2-3 weeks prior to closing
- Inform credit cards companies
- Inform magazines and newspapers (requires 6-8 weeks)
- Inform friends and relatives
Banking Moving CheckList :
- If relocating from the area, arrange check-cashing in new city
- Arrange for new accounts and a supply of blank checks
- Arrange credit references, if necessary
- If relocating from the area, don’t forget about your safe deposit box!
Insurance:
- Inform life insurers
- Inform health insurers
- Inform auto insurers
- Cancel existing homeowners or rental policies for date of closing
- Arrange for new homeowners insurance for date of closing
Utilities:
- Arrange for gas service – turn-on or shut-off with final reading
- Arrange for water service – turn-on or shut-off with final reading
- Arrange for telephone service – turn-on or shut-off
- Arrange for cable television – turn-on or shut-off and return box
- Arrange for high-speed Internet – turn-on or shut-off and return modem
- Get refunds for any deposits made
- Arrange for deposits as required
- Inform cell phone carrier and confirm service to new location
Delivery Services:
- Inform laundry
- Inform milk or home-delivery food service
Medical/Dental/Prescriptions:
- Inform doctor and, if relocating out of the area, arrange for referral to new doctor
- Inform dentist and, if relocating out of the area, arrange for referral to new dentist
- Inform orthodontist and, if relocating out of the area, arrange for referral to new orthodontist
- Arrange to obtain copies of all medical records
- Ensure adequate supply of prescription medications
- Ensure vaccination records are complete for school-age children
Pets:
- Inform veterinarian and, if relocating our of the area, arrange for referral to new vet
- Arrange to obtain copies of all vet records
- Ensure vaccination records are up to date
- Ensure adequate supply of prescription pet medications
- Determine if new location requires pet licensing and what the requirements are
Schools:
- Inform schools of new address
- If relocating out of the area, determine address of new schools and arrange for registration and transfer of school records
- Be sure you have a complete copy of the child’s vaccination records
- If relocating out of the area, determine if current school requires you to sign a release to send transcripts to new school – if so, be sure to complete release
Approaching Moving Day:
- Empty freezer and defrost
- Plan to use perishable foods from refrigerator prior to moving day
- Clean refrigerator
- Service appliances as required prior to moving
- Clean or shampoo carpets as required
- Arrange for moving company or moving van for closing date (may require up to 4 weeks notice in some areas)
- Arrange for shipping and packing boxes, packing materials, bubble wrap, tape, markers for labeling and start packing non-essential items and storing them in garage or other out-of-the-way area
- Plan for special care needs of pets, infants, or special needs family members
- Purchase a fire-resistant safe to contain important papers until you can transfer them safely to a new safe deposit box or, if you’re staying in the area, put important papers into a local bank safe deposit box
- Arrange to store valuable coins, stamps, jewelry or other items in a safe deposit box, fire-resistant safe, or other safe location during the move
On Moving Day:
- Be sure you have enough cash or traveler’s checks to cover moving services, tips, and expenses during the move
- Plan for pet transportation – cat carriers, dog carriers, and enough food and water for the trip
- Provide close friends or relatives with an itinerary of your moving route, planned stops, etc.
- Double-check closets, shelves, drawers, cabinets, laundry areas, garage, sheds, and other storage areas
- Leave old keys, garage door openers, appliance manuals and warranty information, and security system information with real estate agent
Upon Arrival:
- Be sure you have arranged for exact funds in appropriate form (typically a cashiers or certified check) for the closing
- Double-check with real estate agent for utility turn-ons
- Conduct walk-through inspection with real estate agent
- Be sure to get keys, appliance manuals and warranties, security system information, and garage door openers at closing!
Immediately After Closing in New Home:
- Take the opportunity while unpacking to create an inventory of items you wish to have covered by your homeowner’s insurance riders – take photos, collect warranties and purchase documents into a single location – putting everything onto a CD makes things easier for insurance purposes if you ever need them later (make a copy for yourself, too!)
- Inform new post office of your arrival and pick up any mail being held
- Inform new bank, obtain new checks, arrange for safe deposit box
- Inform new schools, register children, double-check their receipt of children’s school records
- Arrange for new driver’s license, tags, registrations, as required
- Register to vote (if relocating to new state)
- Transfer auto club membership to new location (AAA, etc)
- Confirm safe arrival with friends and family
